Candidate Profile
Corrogan Vaughn is running for U.S. Senate against Barbara Mikulski. He has a larger than life personality, but it all comes down to a simple statement. It’s all about people and principles.
Childhood
Mr. Vaughn grew up the son of a minister father and a mother who is a small business owner. His father was one of 13 children. Despite having 54 grandchildren in the family, Corrogan is the only boy among them. Mr. Vaughn says, “I was blessed to have a great mother and great father.”
Education
Mr. Vaughn will be receiving a Bachelors degree in May from the University of Virginia at Lynchburg in business, with a minor in political science and economics.
Experience
Work
For 15 years, Mr. Vaughn worked for U.S. Airways. After Sept 11, he was one of seven thousand people who lost a middle management position with a commericial airline. He says, “I understand what it is to be unemployed. Being unemployed requires you to put yourself in a position to better yourself.”
For the past ten years to the present, he has been a political consultant.
Mr. Vaughn is also the owner of two small businesses. Vaughn Air, a high-end corporate travel business, and a newly launched womens clothing line, Vaughn Wear.
Community Advocacy
Mr. Vaughn helped set up coalition groups and non profits, including Helping To Salvage, an organization set up to assist Katrina victims. He also is a former member of Mentoring Maryland in northeastern Baltimore. He was involved with MESA, a program to encourage minority students in the fields of math, engineering, and science.
He is a deacon at his Baltimore area church and is a strong advocate for foster care. He says, “My church has 1500 members and I have been a surrogate male figure for many children who are without a father figure.”
Military service
Mr. Vaughn was in the Air force ROTC and was scheduled to go into the Air Force until he was diagnosed with brain tumor in 1990. He is now a 20 year cancer survivor. He says, “My tumor surgery cost me $257 thousand. As a working class citizen, I was able to pay that off over time. Government exists to govern and serve. It should not supply handouts, but should help out.”
Influences in developing his political philosophy
Mr. Vaughn grew up in a family of Republicans and eagerly followed suit.
His father was an activist in the civil rights movement, which understandably had a profound influence on young Corrogan. He also was one of the first black chaplains in the White House, ministering under Richard Nixon.
At age 12, the late Dr. Aris T. Allen, first black chairman of the Republican Party and family friend, brought Corrogan into politics as the youngest youth coordinator for a gubernatorial campaign.
Dr. Ralph Abernathy, famous civil rights activist, was the godfather of Corrogan. Martin Luther King Jr. died in Abernathy’s arms. Corrogan attests to the fact that both were Republicans.
William Donald Schaeffer, former Maryland governor was also influential. Mr. Vaughn says, “Although he is not a Republican, his love for the state of Maryland was a great influence on me. It made me smile when I saw William Donald Schaeffer endorse Ronald Reagan in 1979.”
Mr. Vaughn describes himself as “a Christian conservative who is a constitutionalist and understands that our nation is not a democracy but a republic, one nation under God.” He is adamantly prolife and supports the death penalty.
Why Corrogan Vaughn is running for office
“My decision to run for office came on April 15 2009, when a band of young men from Loyola College called me to talk about taxation without representation. I sat down with young people, old people, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents and looked at the state of affairs in Washington. I understood then that it’s time for us to take our government back.”
“Our present leadership has forgotten true service. At the end of the day, it’s got to be about people and principles. Citizens aren’t thinking about someone who will give them a soundbite, they are looking for someone who will protect the interests of the constituents of our state and our country.”
“My values as a Christian have made me a servant. As a businessman, a God-fearing man, and a statesman, I feel the road to Washington as a servant, not being served, is for this man who wants to be about people and principles and not party and politics.”
Most Important Issues
Fiscal Responsibility/Economy
“The days of outsourcing everything has to stop. I want to make the office of U.S. Senate for Maryland an embassadorship for promoting new business and bringing back business to Maryland. We have only two Fortune 500 companies headquartered in here now that Black & Decker has left.
Strong National Defense/Foreign Policy
“Israel is our most tried but true ally in the middle east. I am in full support of a two state situation with Israel and Palestine, but Israel must be fully the occupier of Jerusalem.”
Energy Independence
“Drill here, drill now, drill offshore. We must develop coal and natural gas. One problem is that we get from someone else what we have right here.”
Traditional Family Values
“We must uphold the constitutionality of traditional family values. I believe the institution of marriage is a holy institution between one man and one woman. But I believe civil unions should be upheld as well, with rights granted in situations of illness. But in no circumstances should it be called a marriage.”
Educational Initiatives
“Our children are our biggest and brightest resource. I would work along with other senators to put an end to the Department of Education on a federal level. If we abolished the DOE, we could give a minimum of $20 thousand to every student in America.”
Immigration Reform
“We must enforce our existing laws and secure our borders. Marylanders pay an additional $800 per year for illegal immigrants’ education, health care and incarceration. Anyone who has come to America illegally must be deported or sent to the back of the line behind everyone else trying to come to our great nation.”
Health Care Reform
“I applaud our Republican senators in Washington. True reform must include tort reform. It is not within the government’s power to regulate health care. Every citizen in America should have the right to choose their options in terms of health care.”
